ABOUT
Born in 1925 in a small town in the Tuscan hills, Umberto Rossi spent his entire life in Montecerboli (province of PISA). He attended elementary school and the difficulties of life at that time forced him to stop studying and devote his time to helping his family, with another sister and a brother.

He was 17 when the recruiting card called him to go to war. He was sent to the front at Monte Cassino where the Italian-German army tried to stop the Allied march north. Despite the defeat, he managed to stay alive and return home, alone and without food, after almost 5 days of walking through the valleys and hills.
From an early age he loved to collect memories and draw. The artistic vein flourished over time during his attempts to reproduce glimpses of the Tuscan countryside on paper. During his free time he enjoyed experimenting with new and always different techniques, coming to use often strange materials and improvised diluents with fuels and solvents.
Typical of RUM are the fiery sunsets of a thousand colors and particularly nuanced skies, as well as the poppies that were one of his favorite subjects.

In 1959 he was knighted by the Prince don Ugo G. Tomassini-Paterno', Hereditary Grand master of the Imperial Order of the Heraclian Crown of Constantinople, in consideration of the merits acquired in the cultural and artistic field (see upper right).
... thanks to the extraordinary dedication of Umberto Rossi, a well-known Montecerbolino figure, painter, photographer, researcher and collector, who passed away recently, who contributed to the conservation of numerous buildings including the now deconsecrated chapel which belonged to the Mariana Company, where it was kept the precious painting of the Madonna delle Grazie, the ancient oil mill with the old millstone, set up as a small museum of peasant civilization, and the "Room of the Shoemaker", a reproduction of a shoemaker's workplace with an exhibition of all tools and equipment .....

RUM. (1925-2013) multifaceted eclectic character, collector and lover of the past as well as painter and amateur photographer, he did not fail to convey to us the attachment and great love for his country and his land, leaving us an immense collection of objects stubbornly collected, which he called "Carabattole".
